Award Winning Wines

We are proud to have worked with Wedding Oak Winery since our beginning in 2015. They have purchased, literally, tons of our outstanding grapes to make award-winning wines. These include:

  • Aglianaico which was recognized as a “Best in Class” at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle’s competition.

  • This same varietal also won a silver medal at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) wine competition, and a bronze medal at the San Antonio Rodeo’s (SAR) wine competition.

  • Our Tannat won Reserve Grand Champion at the SAR as well as a silver medal at the HLSR.

  • And more good news, our Rousanne was just awarded a silver medal at the SAR.

We are now using some of this same great fruit to provide outstanding wines under our label. More awards to come!

20 Years of ownership

Preserving Our History

When we bought this property nearly 20 years ago, we were drawn by the large stands of mature oaks. We have placed Hye Top’s vineyard blocks among them, working hard to keep these majestic trees in place. Not only do they add beauty to the property, but whether it is the trees or the benefit of their extensive root network, the vines near these trees produce some of our best fruit.

COMPLETE PERFECTION

Going Native

The usual practice in the Hill Country, when planting a new field, is to plow and remove the existing vegetation before the vines are placed. We tried this initially and found that it created lots of opportunities for weeds to grow plus the loss of vegetation contributed to erosion and a strain on the ecosystem. In our most recent plantings, we have only dug holes for the vines and left our native grasses intact. This is made the grassy metals in our newer blocks, drought, resistant, and virtually free weeds. This means more energy and nutrients to our vines and better fruit – and wines – for you.

abundance of minerals

A Very Solid Foundation

Hye Top is located at the top of a large, south – facing hill. There are rock layers throughout, which cause the vines to have to work hard to find water and nutrients. This is one of the reasons our fruit has outstanding quality and an abundance of minerals. The rocks also provide aeration in the subsurface areas. Limestone, granite, and quartz are found in abundance and make our wines rich and distinctive.

Good neighbors

We are good neighbors in two ways. One, we have supplemented our vineyard planting with an abundance of plants enjoyed by our pollinating friends. The results are beautiful and beneficial.

Two, since we planted in 2015, we have been joined by vineyard neighbors who recognize the benefit of this outstanding location and supportive micro-climate. Together, we are producing a growing volume of both high-quality fruit and outstanding wines. There are now eight vineyards within just a few miles of Hye Top.
